Steussy Creation's Bowl Saw

New woodturning tool to carve out multiple bowls from one blank! How it works

how1seethesaw

This is nothing more than a saw mounted on the end of a woodworking handle in such a manner that you can place it in a 5/8" groove that you create on the lip of a specially prepared bowl-blank and cut out the center of the "parent-bowl" for a second bowl. Not only do you save money, but they are an attractive match.

By using a 2-1/8" Forstner bit and drilling one hole on each side of a 6" (or 8") bowl blank (Picture 3) you are ready to use the BowlSaw to make 2 bowls from that blank. (Picture 2) Here's how it's done.

I have made more than 45 sets of these bowls using this tool with no problems at all. It is safe, easy to use and a fun-thing to save our dwindling wood resources.

1. Mount the "parent bowl" in your chuck on the "daughter-bowl" side of the blank and work it to your desired shape.

2. Reverse the bowl and mount to begin the 5/8" groove around the outside for the BowlSaw. You can use a parting tool, but I use a 1/4" Hamlet bowl gouge and finish with a 1/2" Hamlet skew with a round shank.

3. When groove is 3/8" from bottom introduce the BowlSaw and get saw started by turning the lathe by hand. Then jiggle switch to continue action.

4. Slowly rotate BowlSaw counterclockwise to saw off bottom of "daughter-bowl". And--there you are! Two bowls from one blank--and they match perfectly! From there it's easy with a chuck hole for each bowl. (You can even shape the "daughter-bowl" to match its parent.)
